Summit and Muddy Pond
Title:  Summit and Muddy Pond
Description:  Another area heavily represented photographically in this and other CR Boston line albums is the summit of Washington hill, marked by the red "X" just below Bullards Crossing. Above Bullards is MP 139 and the mile and a half long tangent across the Hinsdale flats. Cutting diagonally across the map and Muddy Pond is the boundary between Washington (lower half) and Hinsdale (upper half). About halfway between MP 138, at the lower end of Muddy Pond, and the bottom edge of the map is the former location of Washington depot, the west end of Washington cut, and the top of the grade, all marked by a red "D". Summit Hill Rd. runs across the mid-point of the cut. For you younger "B&A freaks", (and you know who you are), the house atop Earnes Hill to the east of Muddy Pond is rumored to be Arlo Guthrie's. The structure across the road from the red "D" is the "Cat Lady's" house, which no longer exists.

Helpers
Title:  Helpers
Description:  Washington Hill in western Mass was a manned helper district in the mid 80s. A helper set has passed under the local road that passes over the crest and is headed toward Westfield. The GP 38 was an outlier here. The Albany Division, and the Boston Line especially, was almost all GE's in this region. Selkirk was the major maintenance base for GE's on the Conrail system.
