S.S.Pierce & Co 1859 |
Description: |
This August 15th 1859 Maine Railroad Corp receipt dates from before the Maine Centrals formation during the Civil War. If you lived in New England back in the post WWII era SS Pierce items showed up on the grocery shelves. As I recall their products were on the expensive side and of higher than average quality. A look in Wikipedia will prvide some back ground. The S.S.Pierce company was fromed in 1831 and eventually was sold to Seneca Foods of New Your in 1972. This company used the name into the 1980s. /DL |

Description: |
The print is dated 6/18/1914 at Portland, Me. MEC had very few 2-6-2s. I could find no reference to a 2-6-2 #4. There was a 2-6-2 #4 on the RF&RL which became RF&RL#52 in Sept of 1903 then it was aquired by MEC in 1907 and numbered 113. I don’t think this locomotive is that #113 unless it was never relettered to #113... /DL |

Granite Tariff |
Description: |
Issued by the Freight Traffic Dept April 17th 1915 over the western end of the Calais Branch. Another Tariff would have been added to this one to take the loads further on the system beyond Bangor. So if my math is correct this comes to 31.5 cents per 1000 lbs, 63 cents per ton or $25.20 for a minimum car load of 40,000 lbs. /DL |

CANADIAN NATIONAL 6017 |
Description: |
The CN U-1-b was built by Canadian Locomotive Works in 1924 and scrapped in 1960. The 4-8-2 is at the Grand Trunk station in Portland ready to power the Montreal train. In less than two months after I shot the Mountain type a Pacific would make the last steam passenger run to Montreal. |

GRAND TRUNK 7527 |
Description: |
Grand Trunk (New England, not GTW) O-19a 7527 was built by Schenectady in 1919 (USRA). In two months 7527 and 7531 would leave Portland under steam and end steam switching there. Decades after I shot the GT 0-6-0, P2k offered a model with the same number and the GT (New England) herald -- the only thing that needed modification was the front number board and handrail. |

SUNSET ON BOSTON & MAINE STEAM |
Description: |
B&M P-4-a 4-6-2 3713 has returned to the East Somerville engine terminal (Boston) and is being serviced after taking an excursion train to Portland. This may be the last photo of 3713 in steam. I shot her with available light. Built by Lima in 1934, the Pacific is being restored at Steamtown. Steam continued to power commuter trains for a few more months but 3713 pulled the last long distance steam train and was not suitable for the commuter trains. She lasted this long mainly because she was equipped to operate with a snow conveyor/melter. Note that only half the coal tower shows in the photo - it serviced six tracks. |
