The Old Traffic And The New
Title:  The Old Traffic And The New
Description:  Saved by having a "No Parking" sign attached to it, a grade crossing warning sign remains on Orono Orchard Road for the now-abandoned Dakota Rail line. Which crosses the street at the bottom of the hill. Note the sign warning of the new traffic on this line: bycicles.

Impressive Lashup
Title:  Impressive Lashup
Description:  Now this lashzps puts the "power" in "horsepower"! This eastbound freight is mostly pulled onto the siding but the crew seemed to be having trouble with the consist. For when I grabbed this and several other shots the tail end of the train was still out on the main track up in Long Lake. The Luce Line trail bridge over the BNSF/Highway 12 bypass corrior is in the distance.

BNSF 8301 Roster Shot
Title:  BNSF 8301 Roster Shot
Description:  A roster shot of this BNSF-ized Warbonnet. Sad to see that tie red paint on the nose is badly weathered. Is the orange, silver, and green in it's future, or will it's Santa Fe-esque paint be touched up?

Wow!
Title:  Wow!
Description:  A massive ammount of major horsepower -six units!- waits on the siding next to the Highway 12 bypass. For some reason, a third of the train was still hanging out on the main track up at the "West Wayzata" end of the Wayzata-Orono-Long Lake siding on the Wayzata sub.

Wow, this turned out great!
Title:  Wow, this turned out great!
Description:  Thanks to lowering the brightness on my 2010 Olympus Stylus, this slightly backlit shot turned out great! This locomotive is the DPU unit on an eastbound grain job that got tagged by the dispatcher in Long Lake for a couple hours, leaving it parked on the main just over the border with Orono at Willow Drive.

Skytop Obs First?
Title:  Skytop Obs First?
Description:  The 261 and the westbound fall color trip to Willmar nears the Old Crystal Bay Road overpass in Orono. It is interesting that the 261 was coupled up to the "Cedar Rapids" for the westbound leg of the Willmar trip. This doubtless was to allow the Amtrak unit to be on the hind end due to having to back up at Minneapolis Junction to gain access to the north leg of the wye there to access the Wayzata Sub. Note the spectators on the Willow Drive bridge at the upper left. Folks sure are well-informed about the 261! Who said people thought trains were boring?

Traffic Stopper!
Title:  Traffic Stopper!
Description:  The 261 is actually stopping traffic on Highway 12 at right as she charges past Old Crystal Bay headed for Maple Plain and all points west from there to Willmar. Note the stopped car and stopped motorcyclist at the lower right.

The Traffic Resumes
Title:  The Traffic Resumes
Description:  Traffic on Highway 12 picks up speed again as the 261 fall color run to Willmar leaves Old Crystal Bay road behind it. Just visible in the upper right corner are a motorcyclist and an auto using the shoulder to get a better look at the 69 year-old Class S-3 Alco as Steve Sandburg and comapny work their magic. I bet even the State Patrol would let those shoulder-hugging motorists slide, considering the distraction they were contending with!

Next Stop Willmar
Title:  Next Stop Willmar
Description:  The Friends of the 261's fall color jaunt to Willmar heads for Maple Plain and all points west to Willmar as the train thunders west paralell to US Highway 12. Note the bold souls in the upper right corner who actually pulled off the highway illegally! I think a State Trooper might not have granted those ralilfans a pass if a trooper happened along, train or no train. Some railfans catch all the breaks.
