CGW RS2 54
Title:  CGW RS2 54
Description:  Chicago Great Western Railway RS2 54 at Randolph, Minnesota on February 12, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in August 1949 (c/n 77186), it was one of eight RS2's (#'s 50-57) on the CGW roster. All went to the C&NW in the July 1968 merger, and retained their CGW numbers. This particular unit was the last locomotive on the C&NW in CGW paint, and the last operating RS2 on the C&NW. It was in service at Randolph, MN September 1976, at Huron, SD during October 1979, and was retired February 17, 1981 and sold to Precision National Corp, Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Buried Tie
Title:  Buried Tie
Description:  The old CGW grade is still intact down by the former Cannon River crossing. Remarkably, the roadbed still retains ties, such as this half-buried specimen. I can't believe the Cheap and Nothing Wasted would leave these behind. Maybe they were too far gone?

From Road To Grade Again
Title:  From Road To Grade Again
Description:  I went "guerrilla" and slipped up a private road which occupied the former CGW north of 302nd Street in order to quickly snap this vista of the overgrown grade which stretches north from here to the site of the Cannon River bridge (thank you, Google satellite view, for the latter info).

Ragged Heap Of Former Railway
Title:  Ragged Heap Of Former Railway
Description:  We are looking north from 310th Street, which is a couple clicks south of Randolph proper. Here the right-of-way of the former Chicago Great Western mainline remains reasonably intact due to two farmers using it as a buffer between their properties. Note the remains of the ROW drainage ditch at left.

Still Reasonably Intact
Title:  Still Reasonably Intact
Description:  Now we are looking south from 302nd Street. Here the former CGW grade is remarkably intact, though now looking more like a arboretum than a former railway line. Isn't it amazing how nature always coats abandoned grades with abundant tree life?

Is That A Sawed Off Telegraph Pole?
Title:  Is That A Sawed Off Telegraph Pole?
Description:  Now we are looking south from 310th Street down a portion of the former Chicago Great Western right-of-way which was kept as a property buffer. Note the former ROW fence in the center background and the possible sawed off telegraph pole in the left center foreground. The latter would place the roadbed approximately along the Evergreen you see in the right center.

CNW/UP
Title:  CNW/UP
Description:  The CNW MNDOT sign remains on the north crossbuck of the Dixie Avenue crossing. A UP sign was added after the 1995 UP/CNW merger, but even that is out of date now that Progressive Rail is operating the remaining ex-CGW track from Northfield to Cannon Falls.

Former CGW At Dixie Avenue
Title:  Former CGW At Dixie Avenue
Description:  We are looking east along the former CGW Northfield-Red Wing (Northfield-Cannon Falls today) at Dixie Avenue. Time seems to have stood still here, making it seem like it is still the 1970s, what with the jointed rail and the CNW MNDOT plate on the crossbuck.

The Former Crossing -- And Site Of Much More
Title:  The Former Crossing -- And Site Of Much More
Description:  Here is where the Chicago Great Western main line once crossed the Northfield-Red Wing (today Northfield-Cannon Falls) line. To the right is the site of the first depot the CGW had here. Behind the power pole in the left background is where the Milwaukee Road's competing Red Wing-Northfield branch once was located. There sure is a lot of Minnesota railroad history here in Randolph.

A CGW "Fingerprint"
Title:  A CGW "Fingerprint"
Description:  I found a tie fragment a few feet south of the former CGW grade crossing on 302nd Street. This has sat here since the early 1980s! They sure made railroad ties to last, even when fragmented. These bits of railroad tie in turn make a definitive "fingerprint" that this indeed was the old CGW.
