Hudson River Car Line Interuban on Main St |
Description: |
Photographer La Mar M Kelley of Elkhart, Indiana captured this wonderful image of a 1912 era New Jersey Public Service Railway built 3500 interurban stopping at the New York, Susquehanna & Western depot at Main and Mercer in downtown Hackensack. Cars on this line ran from the ferry terminal at Edgewater to the Hudson River Line's terminus in Paterson (with some cars turning around in Maywood). This image was snapped with only six days left for the line, which was abandoned on Xugust 5, 1938 by the then renamed Public Service Coordinated Transport. Kelley, an early member of the Central Electric Railfans' Association, died January 5, 1948 "in railroad service." #351 was built in 1912 at the Public Service Newark Shops for the Bergen Division. It was scrapped at Passaic Wharf in Newark during 1938/39. |

Public Service Freight Motor |
Description: |
Image was captured by Richard H. Young of Clifton NJ. Per his notes, "Public Service Coordinated Transport freight motor #5218 rests on a siding in the Hackensack Car Yard two days before abandonment of the Hudson River Line." That being said, this trolley looks exactly like the Line Cars in the book "Public Service Railway Bergen Division" by Sennstrom and Francis, and I don't know of any freight on the Hudson River Line, so I believe that this is a 5400 series Line Car and would have later been numbered in the 5400-5419 block. I cannot explain the numbering discrepency. |

PSCT 3511 |
Description: |
Image is by Richrd H. Young of Clifton NJ. Just two days before the end of all service on Line 1, the Hudson River Line, a 3510 series Public Service Coordinate Transit 1912 trolley (double trucked #3511 in the company's duco red and yellow/cream livery) head over the Erie's New Jersey and New York Division at speed. The car was 34" 6" long. It was built in Public Service's Newark Shops in 1912 for the Bergen Divison where it served its entire life, delivered to Edgewater car house in August of 1912. It seated 52 passengers and was rebuilt in 1927. It was scrapped at Passaic Wharf within a year of this picture. |

For many decades watchmen controlled the manual crossing gates on the Pascack Valley Line of the Erie Lackawanna from these iconic towers running through the county seat of Bergen County. Description: |
One of the many crossing gate watchtowers in Hackensack, NJ... this one was located alongside Linden in the block between Maple Avenue and Clinton Place. Camera is aimed south (railroad east) looking towards Maple Place, and then Anderson Street one block further, which is lost in the blown out white area. Note the electric wires running along the ground from the tower towards Clinton Place at the lower right center section of the frame. Photorapher is also unknown. |

Anderson Street Watchman's Tower |
Description: |
This little tower was located at the northeast corner of the interesection of the New Jersey & New York Railroad (the Pascack Valley Line of the Erie Lackawanna) and Anderson Street, and was used by the local watchman who controlled the manual crossing gates for the six southbound, six northbound, and one roundtrip freight a day. Built around 1910, this structure would actually survive well into the 1970s (I believe automatic gates were installed around 1978 or so). Photographer is unknown. |

Westbound semaphore |
Description: |
The semaphore at Moore Street, MP 13.1, is missing some lenses by this date, but is set in the down aspect, indicating stop. The term semaphore dates back to Roman times (at least) when signals were sent across battle fields and other long distances by men with flags, known as semaphores. |

Semaphore at Moore Street |
Description: |
This is the eastbound sempahore and smash board at Moore Street. This is the location of the second Hackensack depot on the Susquehanna. The smashboard dates back to when the drawbride over the Hackensack River hadn't yet been welded shut. When the bridge was open, this signal would drop in the path of the train, and break with a loud noise if a train went through it, acting as a secondary alert (after the signal) and a telltale that a train had ignored a stop signal. |

NYSW 1802 |
Description: |
My first ever Suzy-Q train - I'd actually dreamt that I would see this train that morning... weird. It's crossing Moore Street here with the Bergen Record building in the background. I still recall that semaphore signal dropping and the realization that a train was coming! Sadly, I had my Kodak X15 Instamatic. As an aside, look at the crossing gates... notice the black and white stripes on the gates and the 'old' lantern-style teardrop lamps. When was the last time you saw those? |

Description: |
As the train pulls away to Main Street it passes an office building errected on the foundation of the original NYSW Hackensack depot. Note the wave from the friendly engineer. GP18 #1802 arrived on the property 8/62, with two sister GP18s. These were the first units to wear the yellow-jacket scheme. They were bought on a government loan arrnaged for by Irving Maidman, who had bought the Edgewater Ford plant and then bought the railroad to ensure service. Maidman, however, cut costs and killed the commuter trains. |

The GP 18s turned up everywhere, so it was no surprise to find one on a work train on the Hackensack River bridge. Note the FJ&G flat right behind the power. The river was still an artery of commerce-note the barge at far right. Stone was a common item transported by barge in the New York area. |
