Description:  BUOI rolls east past a stubble cornfield near Arkport as it heads for Hornell, Upstate NY can be beautiful in the winter as the low light and golden colors warm the scene-if you can stand the cold temperatures. It was in the mid 20s this day.

Title:  Awake thou wintry earth
Description:  Two weeks into spring, the Earth is still a little groggy. SLN 5 makes its way past a field of stubble corn that wont see a plow for a few more weeks yet, splitting the semaphores at MP 337 as it goes, the signal on track 1 already dropping in response. 50 stack platforms make up the train today.

Description:  The milepost to the right of BUOI gives away the location as the train approaches Hornell and a pick up at Morrison Knudsen. To the left of the train, next to the pole line, you can see a semaphore in the approach position. There were a pair of semaphores there, across from each other. It was not an easy location to access, hence there are few photos of that set, unlike the Tioga Center blades, which you could shoot from the shoulder of NY 17C. The train is on track 1, the "fast" track, with a 40 MPH speed limit. Track 2, the "D&H main", so called becaise some Conrail dispatchers would put D&H trackage rights trains on it, had a section of 25 MPH and a section of 10 MPH speed restrictions, making for a very slow trip to River Jct.

Description:  BUOI and OIBU, though they were through trains, did switch customers at locations not served by locals, mostly on the Delaware Division. This BUOI is working at a feed mill in Arkport in the snow, which must have been a delight for the ground man. I can't help picturing a set of EL GP 7's handling this task.

Description:  BUOIs power rolls gently on the siding past the Arkport lumber yard after spotting a car at the feed mill on the other side of the crossing, whose flashers are at left. For some reason, the crossing protection was placed between the main track and siding. Ive never seen this anywhere else.
