Great view |
Description: |
This was taken from up above Corning on the NY 414 overpass. It gives a good look at the layout in Corning-see the photo of BUME from 1987 in the D&H album for a deeper explanation. The train, TV 300, is on the ex Erie post 1951 alignment, which took the railroad out of the street in downtown Corning, and made a connection with the NYC here. The east leg of that connection is in the foreground. The red lights at CP West Glass, visible to the right of the train in the distance, mark where the west leg of the NYC connection joins the Southern Tier Line. The empty bridge abutments are the abandoned DLW, which passed here before it diverged shortly to the west to head for Bath, Groveland, and Buffalo. |

ABBU at E Glass |
Description: |
This photo shows the area on the east side of Corning that was CP E Glass for much of Conrails existence. The relay case can be seen to the left of track 1 at the crossovers. The lead to the Corning Secondary is the track going off to the left at the lower left corner of the frame. The E Glass/N Glass/W Glass complex formed a wye that connected the Corning Secondary and the Southern Tier Line. The Corning Secondary had been the NYC line along Seneca Lake to Geneva and a connection with the Water Level Route, now Conrails Chicago Line. Trains such as SYEN would come down this line, taking the W Glass leg of the wye and roll through Gang Mills Yard, where there was a connection back to the old alignment on the east side of the Tioga River. That line went down the Grand Canyon of PA to a connection with the Pennsy at Jersey Shore PA on the Buffalo Line. This was part of the 1951 realignment that took both the Central and the Erie out of the street in downtown Corning, a route now followed by NY 352, locally Dennison Pkwy. To the left of the existing track is an empty right of way. This was the DLW, which parallelled the Erie here, having returned to its own line just east of here after the 1959 facilities coordination, whereby the DLW abandoned its main as a through route from the west side of Binghamton. Here at Gibson it returned to its own line to reach Bath, Cohocton, and Groveland on its way to Buffalo. That line would be downgraded, and mostly abandoned after the 1960 EL merger. Prior to 1959, the DLW ran next to the Erie from here to Horseheads, where the lines separated to enter Elmira. |

Going thrjugh at Glass |
Description: |
East Glass, that is. TV 301 passes the home signal at CP E Glass, the east leg of the wye leading to the Corning Secondary, the ex NYC line that runs north along Seneca Lake to a connection with the Chicago Line at Lyons. The line will be downgraded in a few years-abandoned south of Wellsville-and this poinw will be renamed CP Gibson when the switch at N Glass is changed to a hand throw. Fall color abounds on this mid October day. TV 301 will follow the Erie west of Corning to Buffalo.( |

Broad expanse |
Description: |
This view of TV 301 shows a wide view of the Chemung River as it approaches Corning. The tracks are the former Erie, the empty space to the left was the Lackawanna right of way. To the right, is the still building NY 17 bypass around Corning. Drivers wishing to go through Corning at this time still have to go downtown, following what is now NY 352-Dennison Pkwy-through the middle of town. The roadway will be open in the next year or so, but the 4 lane will end here until the segment connecting to the rest of the Southern Tier Expressway is completed in 1995, vexing train chasers who still have to go though town and deal with a couple of lights to try and stay with the train. If you had some luck and the slowpokes stayed out of your way, you had a chance. Im standing on the NY 414 overpass. |

Got the board |
Description: |
The Southern Tier picnic train has the board at East Glass and is about to take to the Tier and take off. Once clear of the plant, Jack Kithcart, Southern Tier GM was running. He notched it out and he was gone. I did not catch the train all the way back to Binghamton. Jack must have thought he was running the Erie Limited. Im told he ran 70 MPH to Binghamton. |

Between the signals |
Description: |
The same BUOI we saw at Arkport now passes CP Corning after working at Gang Mills. Hes shed some power, now with only his two lead units, the trailing two dropped at Gang Mills yard. Note the curved concrete on the bridge at far left. This is the 1951 alignment that moved the tracks out of the city. The Erie station built at that time was at this location, the platform between the two main tracks, as can be seen from the space that still exists there. The building was down below at street level, with a parking lot at the end of one of the local streets. It was torn down about the time of this photo. The DLW was adjacent to the present tracks, on the right. It was abandoned after the EL merger in 1960. This location was formerly known as West Glass, and was the end of the west leg of the wye that was formed by this connection to the Corning Secondary, which went north from this point to join the Chciago Line at Lyons. |

CEFX 1033 |
Description: |
The family and I were on a weekend get-away, and while they were lapping it up at the indoor pool in the hotel, I was out looking for train action and I was'nt having any luck. Just before we headed for home I said: "Let me take just one last walk to the tracks". As soon as I got out of the pick-up I could hear it rumbling up the line, and I was hoppin' happy to see it! |
