BO 4-6-0 #117, "Thtacher Perkins" - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
This is a nice photo of the historic B&O 4-6-0 #117 "Thatcher Perkins" on display at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. According to the B&O RR Museum where the loco now resides, ""This engine was the next step up from earlier 4-4-0 American type locomotives. It was built at Mt. Clare, during the Civil War in 1863, and honors its builder Thatcher Perkins. Designed for special purpose to pull heavier war passenger trains on the mountainous part of the B&O between Cumberland and Wheeling. The 4-6-0 class represented the culmination of the balloon smokestack required for wood fuel. Later engines burned coal and had bigger boilers and shorter stacks to fit under bridges. It was first exhibited by the railroad in 1892 and again in 1927 at the Fair of the Iron Horse." It also appeared in 1934 Chicago "Century of Progress" and again at the 1939 New York World's Fair (this photo). This photo is from the Ralph G. Dunn collection. |

"General Motors Futurama," 1939 |
Description: |
Extra Board. Here is a scan of a photo entitled "General Motors Futurama." It was published in Robert Mojtowicz's 1998 book entitled "Sidewalk Critic: Lewis Mumford's Writings On New York." Depicted here is the facade of the General Motors "Futurama" pavilion. Parked in front of it are two of GM's new E-3A diesel-electric locomotives built for passenger service. The trail unit appears to have had its side panels removed so as to reveal its innards to folks attending the 1939 World's Fair in New York. |

CB&Q 4-4-0 Class A-2 35 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4,0 American type Class A-2 35 at the New York World's Fair in Flushing, New York on May 28, 1940, photographer unknown, print from Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. According to the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and Richard F. Kerka, this locomotive was built by CB&Q's Aurora Shops in 1890 as Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad 66, later renumbered H&StJ 666, and renumbered in 1904 into the CB&Q system as CB&Q 359. It was rebuilt in Denver in June 1932 for exhibition at the Century Of Progress (held in Chicago, Illinois during 1933-34) as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 35. The following is from Hol Wagner, explaining the number 119 on the front of the smokebox: It was used in the pageant (at the NY Fair during 1939-40) to represent Union Pacific No. 119 at the joining of the rails of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869. And BTW, the 35 was backdated to represent B&MR for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Burlfngton's arrival at Denver in May 1882. It carried B&MR lettering for that, but by the next year when it went to Chicago's Century of Progress Exhibition it had been relettered CB&Q. |

1964 Worlds Fair |
Description: |
Twenty five years after the 1939 Fair, there was another one in New York. The Long Island RR had an exhibit there with a fabulous model railroad layout featuring LIRR equipment. Hopefully Ill find the slides of that. Im sure Dad took some. There was also a "live diesel" railroad around the exhibit, with a train you could ride. As I recall, it had an EMD cab unit-odd, since LIRR would not get their first EMDs for another dozen years, but I guess the people who built the amusement park trains didnt make FM C Liners-and open cars. Thats me at the ripe age of five in the summer of 1964, enjoying the ride. |

Sign of the times |
Description: |
The graffiti era in New York was in full swing in the 70s. The teens of the less advantaged parts of the city found they could "tag" subway cars pretty much at will, and often would spend several hours working on a train in a yard. The city, which had little money in those years-1974 was the year of the famous Daily News headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead" and with bare bones security, many parts of the system were largely unattended. Some of the graffiti was quite artistid, but most of it was just someones street name. Dad caught this tag on a Flushing train. |
