Port Washington westbound
Title:  Port Washington westbound
Description:  A westbound train on the Port Washington Branch passes the pocket track and enters Great Neck station. The siding east of the station there is used to turn short runs that return to Penn Station there. Since this photo, the siding was changed so that eastbound trains run straight into it from track 2, with Port Washington trains using the crossover to reach the single main east of here.

Work in progress
Title:  Work in progress
Description:  The east end of Great Neck station on the Port Washington Branch is seeing some changes. The steel work is up for a new signal bridge, which will control the interlocking just beyond the platforms. The configuration at the time of the photo is two tracks going to single, then a switch leading to a pocket track. The new set up will be track 2, the eastbound track, going straight into the pocket, and a set of crossovers to facilitate moves in and out, as well as for trains going from 2 to 1 to continue east, the arrangement that is currently in place.

LIRR station
Title:  LIRR station
Description:  The LIRR station at Great Neck was a big place. It had a ticket window that was staffed til around 1800, as it served a community of approximately 57000 in the mid 80s, and had always been a major stop, as it was the place where the branch went from double to single track. Thats still true, and the town has grown since. The building on immediate left is a restaurant, the station itself just beyond. The whole complex was grade separated around 1925, putting it below street level, with Middle Neck Rd on the west end, and Barstow Rd on the east, with a walkway about mid platform. A New York bound train is seen arriving from Manhasset.

Busy day
Title:  Busy day
Description:  Great Neck was always a busy place at train time. The double track on the Port Washington Branch ended here, so trains often met at the station. The schedule had them meeting at the next station west, Little Neck, but things being what they are, meets here were common. The idea was that the westbound would clear, allowing the eastbound to move on with no delay. Its not always a perfect world, and this pair didnt quite meet as intended. The eastbound train, on the right, is just now pulling out, having got his signal, while the westbound makes his stop.

Onto the double track
Title:  Onto the double track
Description:  A Penn Station bound Port Washington train arrives at Great Neck, coming off the single track section from here to Port. Dont be fooled by the signals. East of the station on the track 2 alignment is a siding, used by trains that turn short here.

Approach Medium
Title:  Approach Medium
Description:  Now that the NY bound train has cleared the interlocking, the signal has cleared to an Approach Medium. I did not go to check, but the LIRR must have tied the east end of the siding in with the main track when they rebuilt it. Prior to then, the track arrangement here had been the double track ended, tying into the main track, then another switch just to the east to get into the stub end siding-the short section of track 2 between the crossovers did not exist. Now, access to the siding has been made so eastbound trains dont have to take the main track to get there. All new to me since I had moved away 15 years before-as are the M 7's.
