This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view. |

They have completed a runaround and will re-couple to their train in order to start working their way back to Appleton. The pulpwood cars on the team track in the background are owned by Marion Plywood Corp. (est. 1894). When loaded cars arrive the logs are trans-loaded to trucks for the 24-mile trip to Marion, WI. Marion had rail service, courtesy of C&NW, from 1879 to 1982. The reporting mark is based on Great Lakes Veneer, Inc., a subsidiary of Marion Plywood Corp. and co-located at its Marion, WI facility. |

A CN local approaches Hwy. M as it heads northwest with 44 cars via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 6 Nov. '18. Train was headed for Waupaca and had two locomotives, IC 9565 and IC 3138. The WC built a depot here (on the opposite side of Hwy. M) somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I found it depicted on a map in Plat Book of Outagamie County…, 1889. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. |

I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. |

An interesting, and unusual, CN local (returning from Waupaca) slows to halt short of N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. A crewmember, holding a fusee, is preparing to dismount to flag the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning. |

After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck. |

The C&NW bridge was built by Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co., North Milwaukee, WI, in 1923. Some of the bents of the former SOO timber trestle bridge, also in use by CN, can be seen under this bridge. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. |

A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and Hwy. 41 as it heads northeast with about 16 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 13 Jan. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16). The former SOO rails run parallel to the right. Hwy. 41, partially visible to the right, was not visible from here until a substantial growth of trees and brush between the two rails lines was removed in the summer or fall of 2018. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via gormer SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 aI Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company#was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |
