After the M-1s were on line, they bumped other cars along. The ping pongs-the P54s-were largely retired. in their place, MP72s and 75s were converted to diesel hauled cars. Every once in a while, one would give away its previous life. Here, the side number board from the first of the ten MP75 cabs equipped cars shows on a late night at Mineola on an Oyster Bay train. |

FA to Oyster Bay |
Description: |
An Oyster Bay train takes to the branch, this FA trailing, as was common in those days. Former "zip" car 2716 is first out behind the FA. These were originally MP 75's, acquired for the 1964/65 World's Fair, and were painted in the blue with orange stripe scheme, lettered "Your steel thruway to the Fair gateway." They were converted to diesel hauled cars after the M 1's arrived between 1968 and 72. There were a few that still had their lit nuberboards on the side, even at this late date. |

New paint |
Description: |
One of the new developments since I moved away from NY City five years earlier was a retro paint scheme, somewhat similar to the New York State colors used from the mid 60s, when MTA took over the railroad from the Pennsy, til 1977 when the blue and white scheme was adopted. Here, MP 15 161 rolls away from the camera in the new scheme on its way to Oyster Bay. |
