Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XM-32 38124 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I could not figure this car out as it did not appear in the CB&Q roster listed in Burlington Route Historical Society's Burlington Bulletin # 7, so I asked Hol Wagner, and here is his reply: It's one of the 800 XM-32s of various subclasses sold to the Chicago Freight Car Co., rebuilt and repurchased as Nos. 38000-38799 in 1965-66 and shown thereafter as built in 1965-66. As photos have proved, Chicago Freight Car did not sell back only former Q XM-32s to the Q, as there are photos of at least one or two Pullman PS-1 cars among these 38000s. I don't know that they ever received an XM-32 sub-class. |

Spoor: "In 1969 the Burlington sold 960 XM32's to United States Leasing International, who contracted with Havelock (CB&Q's shops in Havelock, Nebraska) to rebuild the cars with eight foot doors, door gussets, and strengthened side sills. When the cars entered service as CB&Q #39675-40634, all were painted in the pre-merger Cascade Green paint scheme." The plan was to add the word NORTHERN below the BURLINGTON, but by the time the merger was consummated, the font had changed to a thinner style, so these cars never received the full merger name. I've classed it as an AAR type B107, because that is how it is listed in the October 1971 Official Railway Equipment Register. |

This was one of 960 XM-32's sold to United States Leasing International, who rebuilt them, replacing the six foot door with an eight foot door, removing the roofwalk, strengthening the sills, and painting the cars in the pre-merger green paint scheme. It was equipped with the full height ladder on this end only, left in place to access the brake wheel. |
