The following is from the book, NP Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Todd Sullivan: NP XML Series 1100-1289 - While some shippers wanted 40 foot DF boxcars, others wanted to take advantage of the more cost-effective rates for 50 foot cars. NP (1130) is from the first group of 50 foot DF cars converted by the NP at Brainerd in 1954-1956 from 31000 series 50 foot boxcars built in 1950. This series was one of the few large groups of DF cars with 190 cars, as most were built in small lots to satisfy the needs of specific customers and traffic. The DF medallion on the 8 foot door (missing in this photo) proclaims that it was equipped with a DF (Damage Free) loader. |

According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER), this car is one of 49 cars in to 2100-2149 number series, 50' 5" inside length (54' 11" outside), 9' 2" inside width (10' 8" extreme width), 10' 6" inside height (15' 1" extreme height), 9' wide, 9'10" high door, 4860 cubic foot capacity. There are two notes about the cars in this number series: Note K states, "Cars in these series have specially equipped interiors and are not suitable for general service." Note NN indicates that this car (among others listed), "is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids which will be considered part of the car." It appears to have acquired a replacement door during a shopping. |

The plan was to paint the word NORTHERN below BURLINGTON once the merger was approved in 1970, but the font changed after the merger, so the plan was never implemented. For grins, I cloned the word NORTHERN out of BURLINGTON and "painted" it on the car in Photoshop, and I think I see the problem. The letter E is difficult to read in this font style. The final BN font is thinner. This car is stenciled: "When Empty Return To Railroad Agent Clinton Iowa" on the right side by the ladder. The re-weigh date is: CP 9-79. |

Berwick Foundry and Forge built 205 of these cars , numbered 20695-20899, in 1969. They were 50'6" inside, and had a 10' door, and this one is stenciled as having a 5080 cu. ft. capacity. This particular car is stenciled: Blt. 7. 69, and the re-weigh date is: SD. 2 75. The use of red paint with the re-weigh lettering suggests a CB&Q scale was used. There was a scale at Sheridan, Wyoming and Shenandoah, Iowa, two towns with SD in the name, just speculation on my part. These cars eventually became BN 316900-317104. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23013 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. From the book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor: "Built in 1955 at Havelock (CB&Q shops in Nebraska), the 100 cars of the Class XML-1, numbered #23000-23099 were all equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Loader Equipment.". The re-weigh date is: CH 7 77, although below the re-weigh stencil it is also stencilled: Fort Madison 6 68. I believe the trucks were known as Chrysler trucks, and once had a shock absorber (snubber) mounted in brackets between the coil springs, which have been removed by the time of this photo. There are two notes in the October 1971 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER): Note #4 says that cars in the 23000 to 23099 (among other numbers) are specially equipped with belt rails and cross bars. Note #19 says that this car specifically (23013, among other numbers mentioned) is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids, which will be considered part of the car. Of course, that was in 1971, and these items may or may not be present at this date (1981). This car also appears to acquired a replacement door during a shopping. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23040 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 100 in the 23000-23099 number series built in the CB&Q shops, Havelock, Nebraska in 1955. They were equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Load Equipment, one rail divider can be seen in the open door, and the DF symbol is stencilled on the door. Originally painted in the 1955 standard mineral red paint scheme, this car apparently was shopped just before the BN merger of 1970, and received the pre-merger cascade green paint scheme. The re-weigh date is: BJ-3-77, and to the left of the door it is stenciled: When Empty Return to Agent - CB&Q RR Columbus Nebr. |
