According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER), this was one of 43 cars in the 9800-9849 number series (BN #'s 390000-390049), 60'9" inside length, 69'1" outside length, 5991 cubic foot, 176000 pound capacity, 16' door opening. It was last weighed HV 9 69. This car was delivered painted in CB&Q's Chinese Red scheme.

Built in October 1963, Pullman delivered 50 of these 60'9" (inside length) auto parts cars in the number series 9800-9849. These cars were assigned BN #'s 390000-390049. I don't know if our hero in this photo was repaired or not.

Description:  CB&Q XM-5 9831 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the book, "CB&Q Color Guide To Freight And Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor, Pullman-Standard delivered fifty 60'9" (inside length) auto parts cars to the Burlington in October 1963. Numbered 9800-9849 and designated Class XM-5, these 100-ton capacity cars had hydraulic cushioning, interior rub rails and two eight foot doors on each side.

When delivered it was painted in the then-standard CB&Q Chinese Red paint scheme with a Burlington Route herald on the large square plate attached to this end of the car.
