Built in 1955 by Budd in Lot #9679-155 as GN full dome lounge #1390 GLACIER VIEW, 1 of 6 such domes (#1390-#1395) built in that Lot for the 1955 EMPIRE BUILDER, which was ordered in February 1954; cars were delivered between August and Octobev 1955. These Great Domes, in GN parlance, had 57 chairs and 18 lounge seats in the dome with a 34 seat club lounge on the lower level; one of the chairs was later removed to make room for a radio & tape cabinet. #1390-#1394 were owned by GN and #1395 was owned by CB&Q. In 1971, Amtrak acquired these 6 domes as #9360-#9365, the #1390 as #9360. The #9360 was retired in April 1981 and traded to BN in 1983 as #A24, with the addition oa a track inspection theater. The following is excerpted from the 1975-76 BN Annual, by F. Hol Wagner: Number B1 was built by Pullman in 1923 as a 6-compartment, 3 double bedroom sleeper named Burns. It was purchased by the Great Northern in September 1949 as Burns, rebuilt by the GN in August 1952 as air brake instruction car B1 (2nd) It became BN B1 in March 1970 and was later used in testing Locotrol operations. |

Built in 1929 by Pullman in Lot #6249 to Plan #3990 as barber shop-37 seat buffet lounge sun room (solarium) observation DAVID C. SHEPARD, 1 of 8 such cars built in that Lot for the EMPIRE BUILDER, cars were delivered between May and June 1929. In February 1941, GN acquired 7 of these cars as #1070-#1076, the DAVID C. SHEPARD as #1073 (1st). In October 1954, the #1073 (1st) was rebuilt to the #1085 (2nd) for the Seattle-Portland pool, with a 10 seat buffet and 26 parlor seats; the car was streamlined, with a blunt end observation, and the AC changed from ice activated to Waukesha. Later, the #1085 (2nd) was redesignated rules instruction car #X-7853 (with the interior only slightly modified) which was renumbered as BN #B2 after the merger. In 1974, the #B2 was renumbered/named as #A11 DESCHUTES RIVER, which in 1982 was renumbered #B12; the #B12 was renumbered back to #A11 in 1989. The #A11 was later rebuilt by BNSF to sleeper lounge #60, with 4 state rooms, retaining the name DESCHUTES RIVER. According the the Friends Of The Burlington Northern (FOBN) web site, this car was built by Pullman in 1929, purchased by the GN in 1941, remodeled in 1954 and 1982, formerly GN 1085, then BN B-2 Instruction Car, rhen renamed Deschutes River, then renumbered BN 12. Inside were 26 revolving chairs, a crew room with bunks for two persons, a buffet with two tables seating eight, a podium and one toilet. Built in 1948 by Budd in Lot #9657-019 as CB&Q dome 26 seat buffet lounge-15 bunk dormitory-steward's room-hostess's room #251 SILVER LOUNGE, 1 of 3 such cars built in that Lot for the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR. 2 cars were built for the WP in Lot #9657-021 (#831-#832), and 1 for the D&RGW in Lot #9657-020 (#1140). All 6 cars were delivered between October and November 1948. In April 1970, CB&Q #252 SILVER ROUNDUP burned while in storage in WP's Oakland Yard, and as a result, WP #831 SILVER CHALET was sold to BN as #252 (2nd). CB&Q #250-#251 and #252 (2nd) were sold to Amtrak as #9810-#9812, which were intended to be renumbered as BN #802-#804, but these numbers were not applied. The SILVER LOUNGE was retired in October 1981 and sold in 1987 to Charles Barenfanger-Doug Ebert. Built in 1959 by Budd in Lot #9691-090 to Plan #9540 as NP 24DXR-8DRM Slumbercoach #325 LOCH SLOY, 1 of 12 such cars built in that Lot; cars were delivered between May and December 1959. Initially, 4 cars were owned by NP as #325-#328 with LOCH-series names, 1 car was owned by MP (#699 SOUTHLAND), 3 cars were owned by B&O (#7702-#7704, with LAND-series names), and 4 cars were owned by NYC as #10800-#10803 with no names. In 1964, NP acquired these 8 cars as #329-#336 with LOCH-series names; the #335 and #336 were transferred to CB&Q ownership in 1965. BN planned on renumbering these 12 cars as #1480-#1491, the #325 as #1480, but only #334 LOCH RANNOCH (ex-NYC #10801) was renumbered, to #1489. In 1971, Amtrak acquired 11 of the 12 cars as #2024-#2034, the #325 as #2024. The 12th car, #331 LOCH LONG, was acquired in 1972 as #2035. In 1980-1981, Amtrak converted these 12 cars to HEP, the #2024 was converted to #2080 in February 1980. The #2080 was retired and later listed for sale, in February 2001.
