Note the neatly labeled switch boxes and red-painted box for the "torpedoes" and cooling compound. I'm also pretty sure that's a handrail going through the center. Cabooses like these were once part of nearly every train in the USA; now only a few survive but displays like this will continue to keep the story of American railroading alive for years to come. |

Chicago Central & Pacific Railroad GP8 7992, near Carol Stream, Illinois on October 22, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by GMD in Canada for the Quebec North Shore & Labrador as QNSL GP7 101 (c/n A411) on Order C151. It was rebuilt at Paducah, Kentucky during 1972, becoming ICG GP8 7992. On December 24, 1985, most of the ICG's Iowa Division became the Chicago Central & Pacific, and the CC acquired some of the ICG's rolling stock, including this locomotive (eventually renumbered to 1592) and trailing caboose 199523. The IC repurchased the CC in 1996 and operated it as a subsidiary until the IC itself was purchased by CN. The company continues to exist as a subsidiary of the Grand Trunk Corporation. At some point CC 7992/1592 became WATX 1592. |

The eastbound I encountered earlier has dropped its train and returned to Waterloo with their caboose for more action. We see the lite GP 9s rolling under the ex CGW at the east end of the Waterloo yard. Note the "GP 20" model plate on the front of 977. This was once a common EMD feature that had disappeared by the mid 60's. I bet there are a lot of these in railfan attics and basements. |
