SHRT ROW |
Description: |
This view is looking east along the Shaker Rapid transit next to the New York Central RR's East 55th Street Yard, in the direction of the yard's namesake street. This photo was probably taken in the early 1950s, before the overhead catenary was replaced with a heavier-duty catenary supports built for the CTS Rapid. By the way, the NYC RR's yard at left primarily served the Northern Ohio Food Terminal and nearby shippers. When NYC RR built the tracks from its Short Line RR (belt line) from the east side to serve the Northern Ohio Food Terminal, the Shaker Rapid piggybacked next to the elevated freight line's bridges for a high-speed entrance into the city. When the Northern Ohio Food Terminal closed in the 1970s (it was demolished and replaced by the Main Post Office), NYC's East 55th Street Yard was abandoned. RTA acquired it and built its Central Rail Facility on the site of the freight yard in 1984. |
