UP Lincoln Funeral Car |
Description: |
An interesting photo to say the least. The date is incorrectly listed as 1900 since RRPA will not accept a date prior to that. The photo was actually marked 1898. A note on the back of this photo states "Union Pacific - The "Lincoln Car". At Union Pacific exhibit, Trans-Mississippi Int'l Exhibition, Omaha, Nebraska, 1898. Built at Military Car shops, Alexandria, VA, 1864, to meet Pres. Abraham Lincoln's specifications. Was used for his funeral at Springfield, ILL, 1865. Was bought by U.P.RR in 1966." A conflicting story has the car being sold to Twin City Rapid Transit Company President Thomas Lowry in 1905 who was going to restore it for display. Lowry died before he could restore the car and it was passed to the Minnesota Federation of Women's Clubs which kept it in Columbia Heights near the intersection of 37th Ave NE and Jackson St. In 1911, the Federation planned to move it for exhibit. Months before the move, a grass fire erupted March 18 and engulfed the car. Only photographer marking was "RJA". |

This Union Pacific advertisement appeared in the June 1956 edition of The National Geographic Magazine. Dude Ranches must have been the rage in 1956, that's the same year my mother took me to one and I discovered that I'm alergic to horses. I remember the smell most of all. |

UP HARVARD CLUB |
Description: |
Built in October 1914 by Pullman in Lot #4292 to Plan #2521A as the 10 section (10S) sleeper-lounge observation PLEASANT HILL, 1 of 20 such cars built in that Lot; cars were outshopped between September and October. 10 cars were built for AT&SF, and 10 for MP, including the PLEASANT HILL. Between November 1933 and November 1936, 9 of the 20 cars were rebuilt to Plan #4025 8 section (8S) sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observations (various suffixes); the PLEASANT HILL was the last car to be rebuilt, in November 1936, to the HARVARD CLUB, originally Plan #4025D, changed to Plan variant #4025Q in February 1944. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, UP acquired 2 of the Lot #4292, Plan #4025 cars: the HARVARD CLUB and the YALE CLUB, which had been rebuilt in September 1936 from the CASA BLANCA (built for AT&SF); the YALE CLUB was also originally Plan #4025D and changed to #4025Q in December 1943. At the divestiture, both cars were leased to Pullman for operation, and both were withdrawn from said lease in late October 1958. Both were subsequently scrapped in circa 1962. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide. Photographer is unknown. |
