Going thrjugh at Glass |
Description: |
East Glass, that is. TV 301 passes the home signal at CP E Glass, the east leg of the wye leading to the Corning Secondary, the ex NYC line that runs north along Seneca Lake to a connection with the Chicago Line at Lyons. The line will be downgraded in a few years-abandoned south of Wellsville-and this poinw will be renamed CP Gibson when the switch at N Glass is changed to a hand throw. Fall color abounds on this mid October day. TV 301 will follow the Erie west of Corning to Buffalo.( |

Broad expanse |
Description: |
This view of TV 301 shows a wide view of the Chemung River as it approaches Corning. The tracks are the former Erie, the empty space to the left was the Lackawanna right of way. To the right, is the still building NY 17 bypass around Corning. Drivers wishing to go through Corning at this time still have to go downtown, following what is now NY 352-Dennison Pkwy-through the middle of town. The roadway will be open in the next year or so, but the 4 lane will end here until the segment connecting to the rest of the Southern Tier Expressway is completed in 1995, vexing train chasers who still have to go though town and deal with a couple of lights to try and stay with the train. If you had some luck and the slowpokes stayed out of your way, you had a chance. Im standing on the NY 414 overpass. |

OIBU, on the left, has done its Binghamton work, and is now holding on track 1 as a late running TV 303 rolls past on track 2. It will cross over here, and run ahead of OIBU for a crew change and go at Gang Mills. The signal at right controls track 3(ex DLW) where it joins the ex Erie track 2 for the trip west. This was part of the West BD interlocking, installed in 1959 when the Erie and DLW consolidated facilities on the Tier. |

Early train |
Description: |
OIEL was usually an early morning job the days it ran, usually past Binghamton between 6 and 8 AM. I was up and out early, catching it rolling past the downtown buildings at Waverly. This train changed crews at Gang Mills, then took the Erie Main Line west at Hornell, serving Olean, Salamanca, and Jamestown. I really should have paid more attention to it on that segment; the problem was, you never knew if a new crew was getting on right away at Gang Mills. Sometimes the train would get there, and sit all day, killing the chase. I did get it a few times, just wish Id done it more. |

CR 6997 on ALHB |
Description: |
CR 6997 is on ALHB making its doubles before heading out of town at CP-BURN in Allentown, Pa 10/1995. The 6997 was one of the SD40s Conrail rebuilt to Dash 2 specifications in their Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pa. I actually worked a yard job on the 6997 in January of 1999. The engine for some reason wasnt loading and there was no heat in the cab. We went from mild temperatures and pouring rain to a flash freeze. The precipitation ended before it got really cold. The winds were whipping so badly that the lights under the New Jersey Turnpike were swinging like Church Bells!! If I remember correctly, it was in the mid 40s when the shift began and dropped into the teens or twenties by the time my shift was over. The engineer wanted to shop the set, but he was told that there wasnt enough power at 91 Bay to replace the set. Thats why the power we had that night was the 6997, the 6998 and an SW1500. I remember us going back up to the hump and over from the shops and the transfer yard, the SW1500 died and all we had providing power was the 6998. That SD40 was screaming up the hill, the wheel slip indicators were going nuts and at the crest and the alarm bells were going off. I was glad when the shift was over. Without cab heat, the cold goes right through you. I didnt warm up until I got home with the heat in my car going full blast. I remember my father calling the rebuilt 6900s as "Altoona Junkers". Some of the locomotives used as fodder for the 6900 rebuilds came from the KCS and as a result, some of the 6900s had five chime Leslie horns similar to the horns found on the Seaboard System and Norfolk Southern. BTW, the reason Conrail named this Interlocking CP-BURN, is because The Reading line crosses Auburn Street here. This was formerly known as East Penn Junction. The signal visable in this photo guards what is known as the "hole" track that leads directly to the Lehigh Line. This was formerly an interchange track the Lehigh Valley used to get to the small yard that was here that was used by the Reading, CNJ and Lehigh Valley. BTW, the job I was on was the YPOI34 that signed up at the hump. |
