The Southern Crescent
Title: The Southern Crescent
Description: The passenger train tracks from Union Station go through the tunnel under First Street right behind the Capitol at the left. The freight tracks make a much wider swing behind the Capitol and to the north never needing a tunnel. The catenary is for the PRR electric freight locomotives so they can make it to the Potomac Yards and does not go through the tunnel. Pantographs would not fit. The shot was taken from L'Enfant Plaza.

The SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Title: The SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Description: Southern Railway train No. 2 - the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT - was accelerating away from its station stop at Slidell, Louisiana behind E8A's 2928 and 6914. The 2928's oscillating headlight had been removed long ago, and the twin sealed beam light had been relocated into the upper position, but the lower light opening had not very been covered over. Many Southern E-units ran around like this in the 1960's, but by this time most of the few remaining E's had their lower opening covered up or had received nose doors without a light opening. (approximate date)

Hiding behind the E-unit is Baltimore & Ohio 6606, a steam-generator equipped GP9 used on Washington to Baltimore commuter trains. And behind that is an assortment of Amtrak SDP40F diesels (582 and, behind that, 609, with others not visible).

NB CRESCENT
Title: NB CRESCENT
Description: Just 10 days after Amtrak took over operation of the CRESCENT, train 20 was making its station stop at Meridian. The trains cosisted of E8A's 6909, 6913 and 6905 and nine cars: baggage-dormitory car 1406, coaches 817, 5285 and 844, coach-lounge 3850, diner 8382, and 10-6 sleepers 2002 DAN RIVER, 2860 TYE RIVER and 2862 FRENCH BROAD RIVER. Except for the Amtrak baggage-dormitory car and the ex-Southern coach-lounge, the train looks much as it did when it was the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. Cars 5285, 3850, 8382, 2860 and 2862 were lettered SOUTHERN but wore Amtrak numbers, while car 817, 844 and 2002 still had their Southern lettering and numbers.
