Headed west on the ex NKP |
Description: |
I didnt get to Buffalo much-living in NY City, it was 420 miles just to get there, a little out of reach for having one day off a week-so I did not get to see the action there or west. It was something of a novelty to see a train I had seen in Binghamton, now on the western leg of its journey. Heres AFOB, the Ayer Mass to Bellevue train, getting out of town for a run over the ex NKP to Ohio. It will be a quick trip. This shot also gives a good overview of the industrial part of the city, with grain elevators all along the lake front south of the city, demonstrating Buffalo's prominence as a grain milling center. The huge elevator taking up much of the right background was built by Continental Grain, and was the largest in the world at the time it was built. Continental was notable for being the biggest shipper on the NYC. The girder bridge just beyond the signals was the DLW City Branch, to its Buffalo passenger station. The open drawbridge in the distance is the ex NKP; the NS train will use the adjacent ex Buffalo Creek bridge, which was once owned owned jointly by the Erie and LV. |

Big westbound |
Description: |
This westbound had 104 cars rolling through town on the ex NKP. We see it hitting the B&O diamond. Interestingly, the same power was on a westbound I shot in Buffalo a week earlier. |

N&W NS C30-7's |
Description: |
The directed service order meant many leased NS C30-7's made their way north to help run the D&H. A nod to the Dereco years? lol |

BUAB pushers |
Description: |
BUAB was usually a heavy train and often got a push up the hill. Today a pair of NW C30s are on the job, shoving north from Bevier St. |

Showing the flag |
Description: |
NYSW tried whenever possible to run its own power in the lead. Sometimes that meant one of the F 45s, which was always a treat. Todays MEBU has 3636 leading at BX, about to cross CR at BD. The signal governed the long out of service crossing of the EL and D&H here on a diamond. Now it's a pair of crossovers. |

Through the flowers |
Description: |
BUME rolls past a field of flowers as it approaches Page Av crossing in west Endicott behind and ex Reading unit and an NS GE. The building in the distance was a plastic pipe manufacturer, and Conrail customer. The factory burned in a spectacular fire two days before Christmas that year, and they relocated the new plant to Waverly, with rail service on the Ithaca Branch. |
