To help handle the challenges of freight hauling in the Alleghenies, the B&O turned to the powerful 2-10-2 Santa Fe type steam locomotive. This one built built by Lima in March of 1924 as BO #6164 (serial #6714) served well for nearly 32 years before meeting the scrapper's torch in 1956. No B&O 2-10-2's survived. Specs - S-1 class, 64" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 434,500 lb, tractive effort of 84,300 lb. No exact day in 1940 or photographer was listed for the photo. |
