Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad SD40-2 7102 and C&IM SD38-2 74 at Clyde, Illinois on September 8 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from BN Annual 1977-80, edited by Hol Wagner: Beginning in September 1978, Chicago & Illinois Midland units began operating on the BN out of Galesburg, Illinois in exchange for the BN units which were running through from Peoria to Havanna, IL over P&PU/C&IM trackage with Commonwealth Edison coal trains. The coal trains had been running this way since 1970, but the C&IM had been paying for the use of BN power. At first, C&IM SD9's and SD18's were the common 'payment power', but shortly the Midland's six SD38's became the standard units.

Description:  Chicago & Illinois Midland (CIM) SD38-2 74 at BN's Clyde, Illinois Engine House on September 8, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 74 was built in May 1974 (c/n 74605-5), later becoming UP 2804, later still UPY 804. Chicago & Illinois Midland power on the BN was commonplace in the late 1970's and early 1980's. They were in exchange for the BN's run through power on Commonwealth Edison coal trains over the C&IM/P&PU from Peoria to Havana, Illinois.
