PRR 8958, BS-24M, 1955
Title:  PRR 8958, BS-24M, 1955
Description:  Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8958, a BS-24M transfer unit built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in October of 1951, rated at 2,400 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, it's hauling a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. ("Tchowee"; #15 of 39)

Shown here are the Locomotive Ready Tracks below the 17th Street Bridge; several makes and models are represented. Of the six locomotives visible, the following are identifiable by number. Starting from the bottom are PRR engines #8958, #8966, #8669, and #8672. #8958 is a BS-24M built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in 1951 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. #8966 is a BS-16M built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #8669 and #8672 are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each.
