Passing the southbound train |
| Description: |
On our northbound leg, we passed the southbound train at Saranac Lake Station, where there was a passing siding. The section of the railroad from Lake Clear Junciton over to Lake Placid was in poor shape; it had been a branchline over to Lake Placid, and was laid with lighter rail than the mainline, which continued north at Lake Clear Junction toward Malone, NY. Of course at that time, the old M&M north of Lake Clear Jct. had been lifted. |

The Adirondack RR restored service on the former NYC Adirondack Division for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, games that were notable for the US hockey teams upset win over the Soviets. By 1981, the line had become largely defunct as a going concern, and the equipment was all laid up at Thendara. Here we see the RS 3s that powered the Utica to Lake Placid trains the year before. Thirty years later, the Adirondack Scenic is making a come back on the line, resotring track that had largely gone back to nature, and developing a growing rider base. |

| Description: |
The Adirondack RR had an RSC 2 that had originally been built for Florida Power and Light. Amid the turmoil of that operations last days, it wound up getting moved out of Thendara, ultimately winding up on display at Utica. It also barnstormed a bit-dead in tow, it hadnt run in years-and was part of this years Steamtown Railfan Weekend. It is coupled to an equally interesting unit, Al Luetke's Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley U30B 901, painted and numbered as if it was part of the NYO&W's fleet. It was an attractive unit. |
