AMTK SW1 #744 |
Description: |
Finally tracked down info on this relatively obscure little switcher. It was originally built for PRR as #9145. Absorbed by Penn Central as #8575, it then became first Amtrak #257 and finally as seen in this photo by Forrest Trittenbach as #744. After all of that merging and converging, it was finally retired July 1986 at Wilmington DE. Behind it sits another obscure Conrail unit #6867. Looks to be an RSD-12 but can't find it listed anywhere. |

PRR 8608, APS-24MS, 1958 |
Description: |
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 June 1958. Shown near the Passenger Station is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8608, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. It's moving so as to couple onto a westbound passenger train that's barely visible at the left. Sandwiched in between (R to L) is PRR engine #8667 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by ALCo and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8667 was consructed in February of 1958. Several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings dominate the background. William E. Burket Collection. |
