Shown here is Penn Central Railroad engine #6858, an RSD12 road switcher built by the American Locomotive Company as PRR number "8658" in January of 1958, rated at 1,800 horsepower, and renumbered "6858" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Diesels On The Pennsylvania" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (819-38). |

Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 May 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8664, #8658, and #8670. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 was constructed in February of 1958, #8658 in January of 1958, and #8670 in March of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a train of empty freight cars on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 August 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are!Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8667, #8675, and #8658. All are AS-18AM road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8667 was built in Febrtary of 1958, #8675 was completed one month later, while #8658 was constructed in January of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on an ore train rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain."
