A pause in shoveling as Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9945A departs westbound on the middle track at Naperville, Illinois on January 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A fortuitous click of the shutter if ever there was one. In the right background is the station agent at Naperville wheeling the two-wheel baggage cart across the tracks after loading from the power baggage car, a job I was permitted to do when business demanded. I was a paperboy at the time of the photo and Sunday supplements often arrived by train. On a busy day, I got to do the job. |

The building on the left was the Naperville News Agency, my source of employment as a newspaper boy in my early teen years. You may notice steam at the front of the locomotive. One of the principles of steam heat was that the steam eventually condensed back into water. Generally, the steam valves at either end of the train were cracked open slightly to let that water escape. |
