Brackets on the roof once supported a walk way. Brakemen could walk across the top of the train and apply or release brakes as needed before air brakes where invented. Air brakes would be a much safer alternative. Additionally, rail cars diversified greatly. It would become impossible to go from box, to gon, to hopper and so forth. |
