In 2009 Transnet Freight Rail placed the first of one hundred and ten new Class 19E single cab 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC dual voltage electric locomotives in service on the Coalink line between Ermelo and Richards Bay, numbered in the range from 19-001 to 19-110. It is the second dual voltage locomotive to be introduced in South Africa after the Class 14E and 14E1 and is equipped with onboard voltage detectors. The locomotive is the product of a joint venture by Mitsui for the design, Toshiba for the electrical equipment, the RSD division of DCD-Dorbyl for the bogies and Union Carriage and Wagon for the bodies and manufacturing.
