35 years ago there was a terrible derailment on the Atlanta & Saint Andrews Bay Railway (also known as the Bay Line) caused the release of chlorine gas from one of the tankers. As a result 8 or 9 people were killed from the deadly gas, and at least 2,500 people in a 5 mile radius were evacuated. It was later determined that someone had sabotaged the tracks. ASAB 503 was one locomotive out of a 5 or 6 engine consist, and the only one that was a total loss. |
