This is the first Santa Fe to wear the number 684 - later it would be a Dash9-44CW unit. This loco was built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1898 as one of the very first Baldwin built Pacifics iwth cast steel frames. It had small 57" drivers generated a boiler pressure of 180 psi for its 21"x28" cyldinders.The engine weight was a modest 156,130 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 33,145 lb. Here it sits in the Topeka yard waiting for a new assignment. No photographer was identified. |
