Somewhat confusing is this maintenance of way derrick car which was labeled on the back as derrick car #1 belonging to the Kansas City, Leavenworth & Western Rwy. The Leavenworth, Kansas, and Western was originally a narrow gauge line that extended from Leavenworth to points West of Miltonvale. Most of it, including the portion in Leavenworth (upgraded to standard gauge in in the 1890's) was abandoned in the 1930's. However, during the same time was Kansas City & Leavenworth Electric line which operated from Kansas City Missouri to Leavenworth into the mid-1930's. This appears to be from this company since it has the single pole pantograph on it. The photo was labeled and taken by Ray Hilcox of Topeka, KS. If anyone has further information on this piece, I would like to hear from you. |
