Built in 1915 by the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company, thf trestle is still in operation on the Norfolk Southern Roanoke Division. Beneath the trestle lies the CSX James River Subdivision. My brother and I decided to brave the sub-freezing temperatures and recent snow to see if we could catch some traffic on the former N&W line. The snow was covered by a thick layer of ice. Fortunately, someone had hiked up to the bridge before us and left tracks that we could walk in. Alas, the only action happened just south of us, but we spent an hour and a half watching the sun get lower in the sky and seeing the changing light hitting the bridge. |
