Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1554, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during April of 1918 and retired in March of 1950 after 32 years of faithful service. In this context, it's rounding the Curve with a passenger train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. John S. Fisher Collection; #9 of 14. |
