This view from Vestal Av shows the end of track as it was in 1990 on what was once the DLW main line from Binghamton to Buffalo. Looks pretty good for not having any trains on it in 25 years. The line was cut here after the consolidation of facilities, which saw, among other things, the Erie moving its trains from their Jersey City terminal to Hoboken, most of them going in 1957, with the Northern Branch trains not changing til 1960. Lackawanna's trains came off this line in 1959, after connections at West BD(now CP Johnson) and Gibson, east of Corning, were cut in. By the mid 80s, the last customers left on the Vestal side of the river were National Pipe and Plastic, and Vestal Asphalt. No trains ran west of the Old Vestal Road overpass. This part of the line, from here to African Rd, was lifted a few years later to become a walking/bike trail, which has turned out to be quite popular. Still, I cant walk it without thinking of a set of F 3s or E 8s picking up speed as they roll down along Vestal Parkway, heading for Apalachin and Owego. |

The DLW main west of this crossing at African Rd will be a walking trail in less than a year. It will turn out to be quite popular. Some of the old DLW signals were preserved, and stand along the trail in a nod to its history. I could never walk it without thinking of a set of F 3s rolling a freight west, or Es on a passenger train. |

This is the view across the Genesee valley from NY 19 near Belfast. The concrete footings once supported a massive steel bridge here on the Erie/EL River Line, which ran from Cuba Jct, near Olean, to NT, just east of Portageville. The bridge was dismantled around 1981, but the bases remain. For a good look at what the bridge looked like, check out Preston Cooks book Erie Lackawanna Memories, pages 75 and 76. |

Hard to believe, to see it now. This is what remains of the Erie, later EL, main line, seen from the US 421 crossing, 33 years after EL folded into Conrail. A few years of state subsidized Erie Western and a few others was not able to overcome the lack of traffic. Now its gone back to the weeds, birds, and field mice. |

While driving across Indiana on US 224, we saw this old building that is now an events center in Preble. It must have been a coal dealer in a previous life, as there was a row of concrete piers that at one time had a track atop them. This is the top of one pier, the plates that held the bridgework still in place. |

I note that a lot of times, once a rail line is abandoned, the track is removed-the rail and ties have obvious resale value-but the lineside poles remain. The wire has some resale value, but the poles, not so much. This one was being reclaimed by living trees along the old Erie. |

| Description: |
Were looking east along the Erie right of way, not that theres much to show for it now. The track in the foreground is a former Nickel Plate branch that is now an important line for NS. Erie crossed on a diamond prior to abandonment. While EL was here, they ran the bulk of the trains, sometimes 40/day, with N&W showing up only a few days per week. Now, EL is gone, NS runs multiple trains per day here, and the line is signalled. |
