CN 4721
Description:
A CN local crosses Midway Rd. as it departs LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.), just out-of-frame to the right, and heads southwest via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 17 Dec. '17. LSC Communications was spun off from RR Donnelley ca. Nov. '16. In the background, the ongoing reconstruction of Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) continues.

Large, wet and heavy snowflakes are coming down as this CN local bears down on the Oneida Street grade crossing in Menasha. The train originated in Neenah and is heading for Hilbert to work the Plymouth Sub. This does not look like a good day to be a conductor on this ruo.

A CN local shoves past the driveway as it prepares to service LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.) via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 25 Feb. '18. LSC Communications was spun off from RR Donnelley ca. Nov. '16. I was thrilled to espy WC 16 bringing up the rear of the consist. Description:
CN local crosses Milwaukee St. as it heads west via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 16 Mar. '18. The tank car partially visible at right marks the approximate location of a turnout which allowed each road to continue to their separate, but adjacent, yards. The lines converged again at the east end of the yards to continue jointly to Hilbert.

GTW 6226
Description:
A CN local parallels Milwaukee St. and approaches 7th St. as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 19 Mar. '18. Train was headed for LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). Dura-Fibre, LLC, is partially visible behind the locomotive. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.

CN 5286
Description:
A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. George Banta, Sr. continued as President; George, Jr., assumed the role in ’35 after his father passed away. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca' 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. Looking east from De Pere St., I was standing at the approximate site where the MILW rails crossed De Pere St.

CN 5286
Description:
A CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. It is awesome to see this many cars in the yard, it doesn't look like this very often these days. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 310 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

The operators of a food truck recently acquired the property for storage and food preparation. I am not a fan of the ongoing food truck craze.

Description:
A CN local heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 27 May '18. Locomotive is just coming off of the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal and is crossing one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the canal was excavated). Local was headed back to Neenah. The facility which dominates the scene is currently home to Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI. They purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities plant in Jun. '14. The track in the foreground originates at the former C&NW main line (behind me) and is used to service U.S. Paper Mills Corp. on Washington St.

CN 4721
Description:
CN 4721 crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads northeast at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18). The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The Coveris facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge. At left, a fisherman or two are plying their luck in the shallows.

The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office was built by the C&NW in 1965. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left.

Description:
A CN local passes through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 26 Dec. '18. It's awesome to see a local which consists of all boxcars. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores.

Description:
A pair of crewmembers prepare to mount a CN local as it was getting ready to cross Washington St. after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 27 Dec. '18. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment and enthusiasm of the scene).

IC 9565
Description:
A CN local parallels River St. and the Fox River Navigation Canal after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. (out-of-frame to the left) at Menasha, WI, on 27 Dec. '18. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. This portion of what is now River St. used to be Canal St. The former historically ran parallel near the southern side of this island, along the North Branch (Menasha Branch) of the Fox River. The latter ran parallel along the northern side of this island, along the Fox River Navigation Canal. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated to facilitate expansion of what is now TC Transcontinental, Inc. (part of that expansion can be seen beyond the locomotive). That facility was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. The remaining portions of the two streets were combined to form the current River St. Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI, as well as the former joint MILW/SOO swing bridge over the canal, can be seen at right. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment of and enthusiasm for the scene).

It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm, 500 N. Commercial St. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located on S. Commercial St., near Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet behind me). It was razed after the new depot was completed. A CN local pauses on a remnant of the former C&NW main line near the Loop-the-Lake Trail as it prepares to spot a boxcar at U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., at Menasha, WI, at 1426 hours on 2 Sep. '19. The idled Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., stands at left. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to Tom Danz, who had joined the company in 1999, in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. When the closure was announced, he claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking, and high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI and the George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware). Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., can be seen beyond that. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. This small, mostly industrial island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). This view was only available to trespassers until the Loop-the-Lake Trail opened last year. Loop-the-Lake was completed in order to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held 23 Jun. '18.

Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware). Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., can be seen beyond Whiting's. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. The track in the foreground is a remnant of the former C&NW main line. '18.
