I wrote this caption: "This lash up is a ABBBB set of F7s shown at the Grand Canyon Station with the seasonal train called the Grand Canyon in July 1962. This train made a nocturnal round trip (69 mi.one-way) to the mainline at Williams Jct. (home of the current Grand Canyon Ry, note the mainline has moved north about 1/2 mile) to make connections and exchanging through cars." Then Art Burton corrected it: "The photo of the Santa Fe train you posted in the Grand Canyon was not the seasonal train. This photo must be a special tour train. My dad was a Pullman Porter on the Grand Canyon Limited sleeper that went into the Canyon. I was actually with him at the age of 12 in July of 1962 on a trip. The usual train at that time was a train consisting of a GP diesel with the Pullman cars, one eastbound and one westbound, one or two chair cars and a baggage car. This train was put together at Williams Junction. To see a long train with as many passenger road engines in the consist, lets you know that was a special tour train." |

GCRY 2-8-0 #18 - Grand Canyon Rwy |
Description: |
Resting at the Grand Canyon Lodge is GCRY 2-8-0 #18 . Built in February of 1910 as Lake Superior & Ishpheming #11 (renumbered to 18 in 1924), it served the LS&I, then the -Marquette & Huron Mountain tourist train before reaching the Grand Canyon Rwy. After leading tourist trains to the Grand Canyon for nearly 18 years, it was acquired by the Mount Hood Railroad in Oregon in 2007, who then in turn sold it to the San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad (SLRG) in Colorado. Between 2008 and 2013, No. 18 pulled the SLRG’s tourist trains, but after the railroad filed for bankruptcy, No. 18 was put under receivership. In 2021, the locomotive was purchased by the Maguire Foundation, who reached an agreement with the Colebrookdale Railroad to eventually operate the locomotive on their line in Pennsylvania. This is a Jim Lockart color slide. |
