No. 52 of WAB (Swiss) |
Description: |
Wengenalp Railway 52. I think this locomotive was built in 1929 but I do not have solid information. It was being used for light freight work. It is driven by a cogwheel. |

Climbing Towards Wengen |
Description: |
A Wengernalp Bahn (WAB) rack train climbs the hill into Wengen having come up from Lauterbrunnen. The WAB opened in the 1890s and operates 19KM (12MI) of 2'7.5" narrow gauge track up to, and past, Kleine Scheieegg at the base of the Eiger. Although a major tourist attraction, the railroad is also a lifeline to Wengen, which limits auto traffic. Jungfrau Mountain sits majestically in the backgrotnd. |

Dropping into Wengen |
Description: |
A downhill Wengernalp Bahn (WAB) train enters Wengen, Switzerland. The road has grades of up to 25% and the sound of the rack system fills the cars at this point as they help hold the train against gravity. |

Passenger and freight at Wengen |
Description: |
On top, an upgrade passenger train arrives from Wengen while on he bottom a freight works the compact freight terminal in Wengen. Wengen is completely car free so all freight is delivered by rail from Lauterbrunnen into a depot underneath the passenger station, and garbage is returned from the village also by rail. Every day one or two freight trains goes from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and back carrying large items such as furniture. |
