GM&O No. 33 |
Description: |
Something that was not seen very often on the Gulf Mobile & Ohio was a lone Alco heading across the Southern Railway's Lake Pontchartrain trestle on its way to New Orleans. The GM&O would run an extra train on regular train No. 33's schedule if there was an unusually heavy amount of southbound traffic there, or if No. 33 was running late and they wanted to get some Bogalusa cars to connecting roads at New Orleans. We don't know what the situation was here, but it made for an interesting and pleasant sight. (approximate day and month) |

SOU 3166 |
Description: |
It's 5:55 P.M. as Southern SD45's 3166, 3132, and SD40 3170 lead train No. 222 north across the Lake Pontchartrain trestle 25 miles north of New Orleans. Even though this is officially a piggyback train, the first five car are assorted "cover cars" and behind them is a large block of LPG tank cars. These tank cars originated at Toca, Louisiana -- on a Southern branch line south of New Orleans -- and regularly moved north on No. 222 throughout the 1970's. Today is a Saturday and the train doesn't have many intermodal cars. It only has 50 cars and caboose X730. |

At 7:35 on a Wednesday morning F40 258, E9A 420 and E9B 473 were leading the northbound CRESCENT across Lake Pontchartrain on the Southern Railway. Amtrak No. 20 |
Description: |
Amtrak Train No. 20, the northbound CRESCENT, nears the north end of the Lake Pontchartrain trestle. The train consisted of F40 259, a baggage car, baggage-dormitory car, four coaches, 10-6 sleeper, and diner. When the photo was taken, the old swing span had already been replaced with a lift bridge; but the replacement of the wooden trestle with concrete spans hadn't happened yet. |

AMTK 205 and 7 With Tr. #20 (NB Crescent) on Lake Pontchartrain |
Description: |
This is the Norfolk Southern's (ex-SOU) 5-mile long trestle off of which Katrina washed the tracks. NS fished them out of the Lake and was running again in a few days. There is a lift bridge near the north end of the trestle just out of the picture behind the train. Map at: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=992957 #20 is on-time about 35 miles from NOUPT. Note the Heritage Fleet Diner mid-train. I hope it looks better on the inside. |
