ERIE 4-6-0 #970 |
Description: |
This is a stunning ten-wheeler with the white walls and gleaning steam chest, obviously the pride of the Erie RR at the time. Specifics - 69" drivers, 200 psi, 19" x 26" cylinders. Unfortunately no photographer was credited with taking this great action shot in an undisclosed location. With Dave Korhammer's help (see comment below) and based on the location of the Union Terminal Cold Storage Company (partial name in background), I now believe that the location is Jersey City, NJ. |

"Trains" Magazine, November 1950 |
Description: |
Here is a photo taken by Mr. H. Cotterell, Jr. It was published originally in the November 1950 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 58. Photo Caption: "PRR rubber-tired, storage-battery switcher at Jersey City." Mr. Cotterell's Commentary: "No. 14379 is one of two rubber-tired, storage-battery locomotives used by the Pennsylvania Railroad for switching freight cars through the streets of the Paulus Hook section of Jersey City between the famous Colgate soap plant and docks located south of the Pennsy Station at Exchange Place. Each is steered by means of a large pilot wheel, similar to that on a boat." Tractor #14379 was built in Juniata about 1916. |
