South End of siding |
Description: |
This was a typical US&S dual aspect signal that is found in most locations on the former Seaboard Air Line Columbia Subdivision. This signal is the northbound home signal for the north end of Dixiana siding on CSX's Columbia Subdivision on the S-Line and was replaced in February 2018 approximately. |

Shot no 2 of G-head |
Description: |
A wider angle of the area surrounding old SAL G head. The former SAL freight main (CSX's SH line now) crosses 3 diamonds within a mile of each other, CofG Jct, one I do not know the name of and Alabama Jct where the A line crosses. |

South End of Double Track |
Description: |
This is the south end of the 3.4 mile double track from Hoffman to Marston. Years ago the double track ran all the way from Hamlet to Vass just north of Southern Pines. Presumably this was a crossover location at one point. If this railroad could only talk of better days with the "Silver" trains, Orange Blossum Special and SAL's "Razerback" intermodal trains. |

Old fashioned code line still rules |
Description: |
While much of CSX's CTC routes have received upgrading to ATCS, code line still is the primary means of communication to control points along CSX's S-line. It looks as if at one point the SAL ran the code line through the tube alongside the pole and underground, but now CSX evidently just routes it through the elements. The top tier is presumably a de-energized power lines that the railroad once supplied on its own, commercial power now comes in just behind the SAL pole. |

SAL double track signal |
Description: |
This is the tallest SAL double track signal assembly I have seen anyhere along the S line from NC to Florida. I sure would hate to be the signal maintainer working on this one! Believe it or not, this is the end of 3.4 miles of double track that extends from the north at Hoffman (S-238.3) to Marston (S-241.7). No 1 track is the jointed rail line on the right, No 2 is the welded rail to the left. |

North End Double Track |
Description: |
This is the north end of the Hoffman to Marston double track. North of here the CTC is currently disabled, hence the DTC block sign. CSX has been ordered by the FRA to reactivate the CTC between here and Southern Pines so work is currently underway to upgrade the signalling between those two points. It almost looks as if a center pass track could have been located here at one time. |

I will survive |
Description: |
Update Feb 28, 2006 - This picture has been up a while, but I had thought this SAL beauty was going to come down in favor of the infamous Darth Vader signals that have invaded over the CSX system in recent years. This signal was out of commission, but now proudly serves rail traffic, albeit not much, again after the FRA forced Amtrak to restore signals between Southern Pines and Hoffman. |

Former double track signal |
Description: |
You and see the old ROW for track 2. This is the northbound signal and I assume there was a parallel signal next to this one at one time. Track 2 is now the A&R connection track but north of where the A&R actually comes in, track 2 just fades into nowhere, but the ROW is evident. |

Former Southern Pines Crossover signal |
Description: |
Yet another ex SAL double track signal location, to the right of the signal you could see rebar from where the track 2 signal once was. This location evidently is a holdout signal now but formerly was known as N X-Over Southern Pines. |

This used to be the brains of the N Southern Pines crossover, now just brains for hold out signals. Sure wish the S line was still a mainline..... |
