Say it aint so!! New signal masts for tri light color signals lie on the ground alongside the track 1 semaphore at the twins in Tioga Center. Turned out this was a false alarm, and the masts were removed shortly after, probably needed for a more urgent project elsewhere. The writing was on the wall, though, and the reprieve lasted til the following year. By March 1992, the semaphores had become a memory here. |

Trains on the Tier almost never went with one unit. There were too many grades to overcome between Buffalo and Jersey, despite a lot of river running to ease the trip. Todays BUOI has only 37 cars, so perhaps the trip wont be as much of a struggle as usual. They made it over Attica Hill, lets see how they do over Gulf Summit dnd Otisville. Perhaps that EL box car up front will bring them luck. |

Dodging the shadows |
| Description: |
The great thing about Tioga Center was the semaphores; the down side was the hill to the west of the tracks, which made them go into shadow early. I had to dodge the shadows to get the power lit, meaning I had to pass up the "through the goalposts" signal shot. Still the blade on track 2 has not started to drop yet, and it can be seen above the lead stack. |

I always loved the cormfield and hills, but the lighting didnt usually favor that shot, since the train was going to be dark almost all the time. I took advantage of one of the Southern Tiers many cloudy days to get 261 there in more even light. |

Ayers Rd |
| Description: |
The east end of Ayers Rd is well known. It was the location of the famous Tioga Center semaphores, just west of the grade crossing there. The other end is not as well known, but still photo worthy. The deck was removed from the bridge around 1990, eliminating it as a platform for taking photos; it was a popular spot during EL days. We see 419 rolling underneath with 42 cars behind its four units. |

| Description: |
One of the vestiges of the old days that was still hanging on into the modern era was this telltale. It once extended across the LV Auburn Branch to warn of the impending Ayers Rd bridge. Almost 30 years after that line became a gravel trail, the telltale remains. |

Catching the sun |
| Description: |
Skies in the Southern Tier are famously cloudy, and days on end of solid overcast are not uncommon. Some dbys are hit and miss, wiith gaps in the clouds providing a glimpse of sun. Here train 167 catches one of the holes and a burst of sun as it approaches Devils Elbow, a section along the Shsquehanna River that passes around a rock outcrop between Owego and Tioga Center. |

In the corn |
| Description: |
I skipped my usual shots in the Owego area, opting for a shot I liked and saw many times, but didnt always have a train to shoot in that scene. Today, the light was going to be right, so I jumped on toward Tioga Center to get this shot of 39T rolling past a field of standing corn, seen from NY 17C. Its a great afternoon shot after the corn goes brown, and I made the most of it. |
